Geodesic domes are throwbacks to the days of hippy communes and off-the-grid living, but they got their start in Woods Hole. In 1953, at the invitation of local architect Gunnar Peterson, Buckminster Fuller came here and constructed the world's first free-standing commercial dome -- a geodesic restaurant. "The Dome" is located on the hill overlooking Little Harbor, visible on the north side of Woods Hole Road.
