Polly Montgomery

Polly Montgomery was born in New York City in 1917. She first came to Woods Hole in the early 1940's with her future husband Raymond Montgomery to meet his mother, MBL Librarian Priscilla Montgomery. Polly and Ray spent a few years here in the late 40's after they married, and then made many summer visits before she and Ray built their house at 44 Whitman Road and retired to it in 1977. Ray was an oceanographer, involved with WHOI all his life. Polly was an artist, entering her whimsical sculptures in the Woods Hole Art Show every year. She was dedicated to the Woods Hole Library and the 300 Committee Land Trust of Falmouth. She was a member of the Tuesday Tooters recorder group, her Book Club, and the Woods Hole Women's Club. Since Ray's death in 1988, she lived alone in her house, survived the great blizzard of 2013, and died March 7 of that year. Though she lived in New York City and Baltimore for decades, and loved the Berkshires always, Polly lived in Woods Hole longer than anywhere else, and thrived here.
