Anne Gurewich Gordon

I was born in Berlin, Germany in 1931. We came to Woods Hole in 1941 at the suggestion of Otto Loewi. He had been a patient and friend of my father's in Europe. Prof. Loewi convinced my father that the summer heat in New York City was intolerable and that we should join the Loewi's in Woods Hole for the month of August. There my father could use the MBL library and would enjoy the scientific lectures and conversation, while my mother and the children would be happy at the beach. Additionally, the month would be affordable. All that turned out to be true. We rented two rooms in Mrs. Nickerson's rooming house on Millfield St., where the Loewi's also stayed, and ate at the MBL Mess Hall. After that summer, we were hooked.

Each summer was special. Finding friends, Science School, and participating in all the Club House activities (particularly the ping-pong table), were all part of my growing up. At that time, I was the youngest substitute waitress at the Mess Hall, later a part-time lab technician, and always a constant presence at Stony Beach.

My parents bought our house at 37 Buzzards Bay Ave. in 1947. I have spent at least some part of each summer here ever since. Woods Hole, and this house, have been the one constant home in my life.

Professionally, I was a school psychologist in New York and Indiana. I play the flute for my own pleasure. In Bethesda I belong to a conflict mediation center, fostering restorative justice.
