Mia De Weer-D'Hooghe

Born in Belgium (1939), married (1965) to Paul J. De Weer; we both have dual (Belgian and American) citizenship.

Mia first came to MBL in the summer of 1966 for her husband's squid nerve research.

Profession: French Language and Literature (Johns Hopkins: Master's 1969, and Ph.D. 1985 from Washington Univ. St. Louis MO). AP French Language Teacher in High School and Lecturer at the University of PA.

Interests: languages, education, art and travel; three children (Ann, Silvia, and Jan-Paul) and eight grandchildren.

Woods Hole connection: summer resident since 1966, year-round since summer 2011.

Memorable: Rainy summer 1967, pregnant (7-8 months), "squidow", and mother (of 18-19 month-old) in the brick dorm (public bathroom) one-room accommodation; waiting in line outside mess hall (rain or shine, but we were together and no cooking!) at mealtime (across from aquarium). Summers in MBL Memorial Circle cottages (3 children required), celebrating the many birthdays, sharing Science School field trip duty and of course commutes (Dad rode his bicycle to the lab) to Stoney Beach for endless digging, sunning or swimming, conversing, and creating friendships that still last among us seniors and among our children -- after almost 50 years!
