Cynthia Cahoon Smith

Cynthia Cahoon Smith, a resident of Woods Hole for ninety-five glorious years, died peacefully in her home at 8 Quissett Avenue on September 15,2013, bringing to a close a generous and fulfilled life. Her husband, Homer P. Smith, died in 1995. He was the general manager of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole for nearly forty years.

Cynthia was the eldest daughter of Samuel T. Cahoon and Elsie Frances Gardner. Sam was a professional racing sailor and owner of Sam Cahoon's Market in Woods Hole. Cynthia, like her mother, was born in their family home on School Street in Woods Hole. She graduated from Lawrence High School (1936) and Bryant College (1939). She was the long-time bookkeeper for Eastman's Hardware Store on Main Street in Falmouth.

Known affectionately as "Coonie," she was an active congregant of the Church of the Messiah, former President of the Woods Hole Woman's Club, a Town Meeting member, as well as a member of the Marine Biological Associates, Falmouth Garden Club and Woods Hole Historical Society. Deeply connected to her Woods Hole roots, Cynthia was an accomplished sailor, winning both the SMYRA and WHYC Championships multiple times in her knockabout, "WHIZ"(1930s). She enjoyed golfing, gardening, solving crossword puzzles, following Boston Red Sox games, knitting treasures for her children, grand- and great-grandchildren, and cooking countless nurturing meals and sweet treats. Social and adventurous, Cynthia was a timeless friend to many. She was the steadfast and unconditional family pillar... Her family will continue to reside at 8 Quissett, look after her faithful Sheltie "Lizzie," entertain visits from longtime friends and neighbors, keep an eye on her sister "Frannie" (93) at 55 School Street, and welcome family members to a place all called Home.....
