Spencer Baird (at right) collecting specimens in Little Harbor, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, 1880s. Baird was Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and an eminent naturalist. In 1882 he founded the U.S. Fish Commission in Woods Hole.
