Frances Buehler

Frances's grandparents - Frank R Lillie and Frances Crane (she was named after her)- met in Woods Hole in 1892. FR Lillie was one of the early Directors of the MBL and a founder of WHOI. Her grandparents built a house on Gardiner Road, and Frances's mother – Emily Ann Cramer - came every summer of her life. Frances first came to Woods Hole when she was a baby and came every summer after that, staying in her mother's house at 1 Park Street. Frances went to Science School for several years, saying: "It was wonderful – I made friends there I've had my whole life." Frances also went square dancing at the MBL Club. Frances moved to Woods Hole year round in 1969 and her three children (Matt, Victoria and Joe) went to the Woods Hole School.

Frances started baking at The Fishmonger Cafe in 1973 and bought the business in 1974. By then Frances had lost her hearing and she felt that running a restaurant was something she could do as a deaf person. She ran the restaurant and did all the baking for it until 2006.

Frances started running when someone who worked at The Fishmonger suggested it, in about 1974. She ran the Falmouth Road Race every year from 1978 until 2008, except for the year when she was hit by a car and broke her leg. She also ran the Cape Cod Marathon several times.
