Bertha Person

I was born on Feb. 17, 1931 in Queens, NY. I first came to Woods Hole on my honeymoon, in the summer of 1953. My husband, Phil Person, had spent 2 summers at MBL while finishing his PhD. I was so impressed with this marvelous town and the magnificent surroundings. We started coming every summer in 1956 when our oldest daughter, Sarah, was 1 1/2 years old. Phil's wish to have a home in Woods Hole came to fruition in 1963 when we built our home on George St. Our connection grew over the years as we made family friends and ties to the community that we have until this day. Our children, Sarah, Naomi and Matt, went to CSS, took swimming and tennis lessons and did all the things that make growing up in Woods Hole so special. I was active in Science School as Vice President and a member of the advisory board.

We all thrived on the intellectual and cultural stimulation of the community. We spent a sabbatical in Woods Hole, 1961-1962 and our children went to the Woods Hole School and the Child Center. In New York, I was a librarian in public school, which meant that my position wouldn't interfere with summers in Woods Hole. Stony Beach was an oasis unto itself. We gathered there every day with friend and children, and tried to settle some of the "problems" of the day. I would start my day with a long walk around Nobska Lighthouse, play tennis and then a swim. Woods Hole was such a special place for all of us. To go to the library was always a unique experience. Everyone was so warm and helpful and were so efficient in meeting requests for new books. I have spent 60 years in Woods Hole, which is certainly a testament to this town.
