Beatrice Wittenberg

I was born Nov. 6, 1928, Berlin Germany, and attended school in Nazi Germany for 1 1/2 years. I moved to Toronto, Canada with my parents in March 1937. I attended public school, high school, and the University of Toronto. I received the BA degree in Physiology and Biochemistry, and the MA in Physiology. I then moved to Cleveland, Ohio and received a PhD in Pharmacology in 1954. I married Jonathan Wittenberg, who had been coming to Woods Hole in the summers since 1946.

We moved to New York and started coming to Woods Hole in the summer every year with children David, Bill and Rebecca. The children enjoyed the summer programs, swimming, sailing, tennis, Science School, folk singing, hanging out with Woods Hole friends and, for all those years growing up, considered Woods Hole their real home.

Jonathan and I worked on our marine research projects at the Marine Biological Laboratory and, although I was not a group joining person, I got embroiled in the Children's School of Science as registrar, then president, and really enjoyed making friends and cooperating with other parents in that happy enterprise. In 2009 we moved to Woods Hole year-round and have enjoyed the warm, peaceful, friendly atmosphere of the town.
